What does π mean?
The pi symbol represents the ratio of a circle’s circumference to its diameter, an irrational constant approximately equal to 3.14159. It appears throughout geometry and trigonometry (the area of a circle is πr²), in the period of trigonometric functions, and in probability — the normal distribution’s density function contains √(2π). In physics it turns up anywhere circles, waves or oscillations appear. π is the lowercase form of Pi, letter 16 of 24 in the Greek alphabet (pronounced PIE). Its capital counterpart is Π.
