How to Type Physics Symbols and Equations

Published July 3, 2026 • 9 min read

Physics has its own alphabet: Greek letters for variables, special constants like the reduced Planck constant (ℏ), unit symbols such as the ohm (Ω) and Ångström (Å), and operators for vectors and calculus. None of them sit on a normal keyboard. This guide shows the fastest ways to type physics symbols and paste them into homework, lab reports, Word, Google Docs or LaTeX.

1. Use an online physics keyboard (fastest)

The simplest cross-platform method is our online physics keyboard: find the symbol, click it, and it is copied to your clipboard for pasting anywhere. It covers Greek letters, constants, units and math operators in one place, and works on desktop and mobile. For a full mix of physics, chemistry and math notation, use the main Scientific Keyboard.

2. Physics symbols by area

Constants: ℏ (reduced Planck) ℎ (Planck) c (light) e (charge) G (gravitation)
Mechanics: θ ω α τ Δ Σ ∑ ∫ ∂ ∇ · × ±
Waves & optics: λ (wavelength) ν f (frequency) φ (phase) Å (Ångström)
Thermodynamics: Δ ρ (density) σ η μ T
Electromagnetism: Ω (ohm) μ ε Φ (flux) ∇ × ∇·
Quantum: ℏ ψ Ψ ⟨ ⟩ ∑ ∫ ∞

Superscripts and subscripts matter in physics too — exponents (10⁻¹⁹, m²) and indices (v₀, Eₖ) are essential for units and quantities.

3. SI units and prefixes

Correct unit symbols keep your work unambiguous. Common ones that need special characters include the ohm (Ω), micro prefix (µ, as in µm or µs), degree (°) for temperature and angles, and the Ångström (Å). The micro sign in particular is easy to get wrong — copying the exact Unicode character avoids the common mistake of using a Latin "u".

4. Typing physics symbols on each platform

Windows: with a numeric keypad, Alt codes cover some symbols (e.g. Ω is Alt + 234, µ is Alt + 230). Otherwise press Win + . for the symbol panel.

macOS: open the Character Viewer with Control + Command + Space and search by name (for example "ohm" or "planck").

Mobile: for a one-off symbol, the online physics keyboard is faster than installing a special keyboard app.

Lab-report tip: Paste Unicode symbols directly rather than using images of equations — they stay searchable, resize cleanly and remain accessible to screen readers.

5. LaTeX and Word equations

In LaTeX, use commands such as \hbar, \omega, \lambda, \Omega, \nabla and \partial, or paste the Unicode characters into a modern editor. In Word, press Alt + = for the equation editor, then paste your copied symbols.

Frequently asked questions

How do I type physics symbols like ℏ, ω or λ?

Click the symbol on an online physics keyboard to copy it, then paste it into Word, Docs or LaTeX.

Does it include SI units and Greek letters?

Yes — Greek letters, the ohm (Ω), micro (µ), degree (°) and Ångström (Å) are all available.

Will the symbols survive pasting into Word?

Yes. They are standard Unicode and keep their exact form across Word, Google Docs and LaTeX.
